Why should I see a Diabetologist?

A Diabetologist is a doctor who treats patients affected with Diabetes and complications related to it. Diabetes is a polygenic chronic disease that occurs when the sugar level in the blood rises to an extent that it starts harming the body. Having an excessive amount of glucose in the blood can lead to multiple health problems like kidney disorder, heart diseases, stroke, issues in the eyes, and many others.

If diabetes runs in your family and has been passed from generation to generation, it is advisable to see a Diabetologist time and again. During pregnancy, mother and baby become vulnerable to diabetes. If you are obese, inactive, or aged (>45years) it is suggested to discuss the risk of Diabetes with a Diabetologist.

What are issues treated by a Diabetologist?

When you consult a Diabetologist, they examine your symptoms, type of Diabetes, complications and may conduct or recommend tests related to cardiovascular system (heart and blood vessels), the eyes (Retinal vessels), kidneys, and Nerves. A Diabetologist specializes in different types of diabetes and complications related to them. A few of them are mentioned below:

Type 1 Diabetes: It is an autoimmune disease, where the cells start attacking their own body preventing the pancreas from making insulin. Around 5% of diabetic people have type 1 diabetes. This is often hereditary and is commonly seen in children and adolescents. There is no cure for Diabetes but it can be regulated by injecting the right amount of insulin into the body.

Type 2 Diabetes: It leads to chronic high blood sugar levels. In this type of Diabetes, the pancreas can produce insulin but the body is incapable of using it effectively, that is, the body becomes resistant to insulin and the glucose accumulates in the bloodstream. Nearly 90-95% of diabetic patients have type 2 diabetes which can commonly be seen in aged, inactive or obese people. It can be regulated through medication, diet management, exercise, or insulin.

Gestational Diabetes: This can occur during pregnancy. It can affect both mother and the baby. After delivery the mother is most likely to develop type 2 Diabetes. The child can also develop type 2 diabetes or turn obese. Gestational Diabetes may occur due to the hormonal changes in the body during pregnancy, or inactivity/extra weight or can also be genetic.

MODY: MODY (Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young) is an inherited form of Diabetes that is caused by mutation of one in eleven genes. The genetic change prevents the pancreas from producing enough insulin to maintain blood sugar levels. This type of Diabetes is generally witnessed in teens or adults under 35.

Prediabetes: It is a condition where the blood sugar level in blood rises higher than normal but not high enough to be recognized as Diabetes. This can happen when the body turns resistant to insulin or the pancreas is not producing enough insulin to keep up the blood glucose in normal range. People with this condition are more likely to develop Type 2 Diabetes over time.

Why should I see a General Physician?

A general physician treats a variety of bodily disorders and deals with the overall health of an individual. They may be consulted for a number of issues ranging from mild to severe symptoms in some cases. A general physician may deal with hypertension, high or low blood pressure, respiratory issues like asthma or bronchitis, digestive system disorders like indigestion, food poisoning or diarrhea, issues related to the urinary or excretory system, dizziness, fatigue, sleep disorders, and even allergies or skin conditions.

If our body is fighting an infection or disease, it starts to show basic symptoms like fever, cold and cough, headache and sometimes gastric disorders. In such cases, one may consult a general physician to look into the condition and suggest the correct treatment and medications. General physicians can deal with a number of basic disorders of the body and if needed, they may suggest further consultation with relevant specialists.

What are issues treated by General Physicians?

A general physician is experienced in treating a number of issues related to the body, although some may have expertise in a particular field of study. They may be consulted for minor or major symptoms like:

Fever: one of the most common issues among people, that may also indicate the presence of any other serious infection in the body. A general physician can help to find the root of the issue and suggest the required treatment and medication.

Headaches: a number of people experience headaches or migraines in their daily life, which affects their quality of life and productivity at work. A general physician may be consulted for frequent headaches.

Cold and cough: it affects millions around the world, even children. In some cases, a cold may be a symptom of flu or any other respiratory infection. It is best to consult a general physician if the cold or cough becomes severe, or affects you frequently.

Digestive issues: the gastric system of our bodies can be infected often, as food and water can be contaminated very easily. Any issues related to the stomach like acidity, loss of appetite, loose motions, indigestion, stomach ache, nausea, dehydration or food poisoning may be taken to a general physician for better diagnosis and treatment.

Cardiovascular issues: in case one experiences irregular heartbeats, high or low blood pressure, chest pain or any heart related disorder, a general physician can be consulted to look into the symptoms.

Respiratory issues: problems in breathing, shortness of breath, loss of breath, fatigue, dizziness or sleepiness may indicate a respiratory problem, that can be looked into by a general physician.

Allergies or skin disorders: sometimes, our skin may react to a certain chemical or ingredients from the products we use, or the body may develop a food allergy. In some cases after a reaction, immediate medication may be needed and a general physician can be consulted for the same.
