Why should I see a Cardiologist?

A Cardiologist diagnoses, evaluates and treats an individual with heart and vascular disorders. They don’t perform heart surgery but manage conditions that cause heart problems.

You may see a Cardiologist if you have symptoms like chest pain, palpitations, dizziness, breathlessness. You may also need to see a Cardiologist if you are diagnosed with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, Diabetes, any gum disease, cancer patient or survivor. Other reasons to visit a Cardiologist are heart diseases in family history, history of smoking, obesity, starting a new exercise regime, difficult pregnancy or preeclampsia, or a physician’s recommendation. People who work in high-risk jobs like pilots, sailors, and others are mandated by the job to visit a cardiologist for risk stratification.

What are issues treated by a Cardiologist?

Consulting a Cardiologist is very important as cardiovascular diseases are one of the main causes of illness and death in the world. Almost all Cardiologists are experts in treating all heart problems but some are specialized in specific areas like electrophysiology, interventional cardiologist, non-interventional specialist or heart failure specialist, and others. The issues that a cardiologist may treat are:

Atrial Fibrillation: When the upper two chambers of the heart (atria) experience irregular and rapid heartbeat. The upper two chambers beat out of coordination with the lower two chambers and the heart cannot pump blood to the rest of the body efficiently. Common symptoms are chest pain, palpitation, dizziness, fatigue, breathlessness, or low blood pressure.

Ventricular Fibrillation: When the lower two chambers of the heart (ventricles) beat out of sync with the upper two chambers. This can lead to a rapid and abnormal heartbeat that can cause failure of the heart to pump blood. Common symptoms are chest pain, nausea, loss of consciousness, shortness of breath, or dizziness.

Coronary heart disease: It happens when the insides of the coronary artery get filled with cholesterol/plaque that obstruct the flow of blood and oxygen to the heart. The most common symptom of coronary heart disease is Angina that feels like burning, squeezing, heaviness, tightness, or pain in the chest. Other symptoms are indigestion, heartburn, fatigue, sweating, nausea, or shortness of breath.

Congestive heart diseases: It occurs when the ventricles (in the lower chamber of the heart) fail to deliver blood from the heart to other parts of the body. In such cases, the blood and other fluids build up in the lungs, abdomen, liver, or lower body. Common symptoms are fatigue, loss of consciousness, weight gain, increased need to urinate, cough, or swelling in legs, ankles, or feet.

Hypertension or high blood pressure: HBP or hypertension damages the arteries that carry blood from the body to the heart. The arteries can get blocked and restrict the flow of blood to the heart muscle.

High cholesterol: It can lead to blockage in arteries that may lead to a clot. It prevents the flow of blood, oxygen, and other nutrients from the heart to the body and vice versa and can be a cause of various heart problems.

Why should I see a General Physician?

They may be consulted for a number of issues ranging from mild to severe symptoms in some cases. A general physician may deal with hypertension, high or low blood pressure, respiratory issues like asthma or bronchitis, digestive system disorders like indigestion, food poisoning or diarrhea, issues related to the urinary or excretory system, dizziness, fatigue, sleep disorders, and even allergies or skin conditions.

If our body is fighting an infection or disease, it starts to show basic symptoms like fever, cold and cough, headache and sometimes gastric disorders. In such cases, one may consult a general physician to look into the condition and suggest the correct treatment and medications. General physicians can deal with a number of basic disorders of the body and if needed, they may suggest further consultation with relevant specialists.

What are issues treated by General Physicians?

A general physician is experienced in treating a number of issues related to the body, although some may have expertise in a particular field of study. They may be consulted for minor or major symptoms like:

Fever: one of the most common issues among people, that may also indicate the presence of any other serious infection in the body. A general physician can help to find the root of the issue and suggest the required treatment and medication.

Cold and cough: it affects millions around the world, even children. In some cases, a cold may be a symptom of flu or any other respiratory infection. It is best to consult a general physician if the cold or cough becomes severe, or affects you frequently.

Any issues related to the stomach like acidity, loss of appetite, loose motions, indigestion, stomach ache, nausea, dehydration or food poisoning may be taken to a general physician for better diagnosis and treatment.
